Gertrude sounds a little old and stuffy to me, but I think it has potential. I think Trudy and Gertie are the sweetest nicknames, making Gertrude a lot more appealing. It was a very popular name in the early 1900s, ranking in the top 50 until 1923. It last ranked in the top 1000 in 1965. Gertrude is German and means “strength of a spear.” I like it paired with a soft, feminine middle name, like Gertrude Amelia or Gertrude Elise.
